Moderate drinking is necessary but not sufficient to live 2 years longer
What is your view of these findings from the 2017 MHRS study data?
This study of University of Michigan’s Health and Retirement Study, a long-term longitudinal survey on the health habits of Americans ages 50 and older, researchers analyzed a sample of 14,804 participants who were interviewed every other year from 1998 to 2012.
Researchers concluded, based upon 34-years of longitudinal data, that men who drank moderately and followed all the other healthy habits lived 2.0 years longer than men who followed them all except drinking moderately?
Women who drank moderately lived 2.4 years longer.
Those who lived longer also adhered to four other habits:
- Never smoking;
- Drinking moderately;
- Having a balanced diet;
- Staying slim; and,
- Doing at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise each day.
