Over the last 20 years, I’ve had many discussions with others our age about doing more exercise. It seems that human nature is not to act until we are hit by an external shock.
You mention setting a big goal, which is what I could call an aspiration purpose and is what I believe is the secret to consistency. That’s a great way to set people on the path to better health.
Even I failed to look after myself until I diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, more than 20 years ago. That was a blessing as I am now super fit and healthy. The external motivation morphed into internal motivation. At 70 I started trail running, and love it. I write a lot about fitness after 50 on my blog.
